Peter had four brothers and one sister (Nick, Steve, John, Anton and Rose). Their family left Losiacsu to Hamburg and then by ship and made their journey to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

From Halifax, the family boarded a train to Rosthern, North West Territories. They lived at Harry Stadnyk’s place near Alvena while waiting for their homestead. In the meantime, grandpa Michael worked to make some money to provide for his family.

In 1903, the family received application to a homestead entry on N. E. Section of Township 40, Range 28, West of the 2nd Meridian.

Prior to the year 1903 Michael and family, dug a three-foot dirt basement and built a straw hut over the basement. The gophers were so plentiful at the time, that they destroyed their home. Construction of a log house had to begin immediately to survive the winter months ahead. The homestead remains in the family and is under the history of Carl and Lauretta Lucyshyn. MIchael Lucyzyn passed away in 1921.

Not too far from the farm, Peter attended Pretty Lake School for four years. He continued to study at home, as he could not attend school regularly as his job was to herd the cattle on the road. Help was always needed around the farm when you had to work with oxen and then with horses. Repairing equipment, blacksmithing and making ropes were some of Peter’s trades. During his teenage and adult years, Peter attended church, community, and family gatherings.

Peter met his wife Alexandria Komarniski at a dance hall. Alexandria was born on July 30, 1909, in Vonda, Saskatchewan. In June 1926, Peter married Alexandria and took her home to live on the family homestead.

In 1927, the Spanish Flu hit the community with a vengeance. The family was sick with a high fever temperature. A doctor came to the house to see his mother (Agniegzka). The doctor recommended pure spirits, garlic and mustard plaster to bring the fever down. Several years later, Agniegzka passed away in 1930.

Peter inherited the homestead from his father and mother in 1930. Peter and Alexandria had eight children (Adolph, Jack, Francis, Nick, Carl, John, Alex, and Teresa) (see their history).

In 1928, Peter purchased a 1927 Durant car, which was their pride and joy. Peter and Alexandria used the car for many family gatherings in the community. Peter was the Starosta (M.C.) at the family and relatives weddings. They would celebrate for more than a few days at weddings and still have time to do their farm work. Here is a lesson to be learned.

In the late thirties depression set in on the farms. The family car was put on blocks, because lack of money for gas, oil and registration. Peter’s hardship was to pay off a debt on the eighty acres he bought from Florek. Peter said, “If it wasn’t for the Government of the Day, he would have lost the Homestead.” The loans that were held by the banks were cancelled to all farmers, who borrowed against the purchase of land. It cost Peter twenty dollars to obtain clear title to the land.

In 1929, Anton and Peter bought a threshing outfit that serviced the neighboring community for over twenty years. Peter’s livelihood consisted of his threshing business as well as his mixed farming operations. Peter was also involved within his community serving as Councilor in Division 5 of the RM of Grant from 1946 to 1962. He was also a trustee for Pretty Lake School.

In 1965, Alexandria and Peter left their homestead and moved to Cudworth, Saskatchewan. Peter continued to farm. In his spare time, he would be doing various handyman repairs and restoring children’s toys. All the toys and tricycles were passed on to the grandchildren.

Alexandria sewed many patched quilts and passed the quilts to the children, grandchildren and friends. Alexandria and Peter liked to make root beer that was enjoyed and talked about by the grandchildren. They resided in Cudworth until 1978 when they decided to make another move, this time to Saskatoon, where most of their grown children were living.

Peter and Alexandria lived in their Saskatoon home until 1992. They both spent their remaining years in St. Anne’s nursing home, in Saskatoon, until the time of their passing.

Peter and Alexandria are remembered as loving parents, grandparents, and people who were very family-oriented. They created a lasting impression of people that loved to entertain both their friends and their large family. Every Christmas brought the gathering of their family together to enjoy their Ukrainian cooking and traditions. They will be greatly missed by all who knew them.

Peter passed away on April 20, 1997, Alexandria passed away on July 25, 1995. May their souls rest in peace and may the eternal light shine upon them.

Peter Lucyshyn, the fifth son of Michael Lucyszyn (Lucyshyn) Sr., was born on July 12, 1901, in Losiacsu, Poland.
