He lived and worked with his family until he was old enough to obtain his homestead in 1911 for $10.00 that was located at the NE Sec 34, Twp 39, Rge 28, W 2nd Meridian. Those early years were hard and tire-some, as they worked the land by oxen. Stefan held the one furrow plow, while John had to lead the oxen in the first furrow they made, the first place was the homestead of Parents Michael and Agniegzka located on Sec 4, Twp 40, Rge 28, W 2nd Meridian.

Each year they could only plow so many acres. They used harrows made out of trees, three inches thick that they had drilled holes in to place sharp wood spikes, this was all done by hand. As the years passed by John used to visit his sister Rose in Dana, there he met up with Katherine Lesychen, daughter of John and Pauline Lesychen, who came to Canada in 1909. Katherine was born in 1901 in Borshchiv, Ukraine.

John and Katherine were married on June 2nd, 1918 in St. Marus, Roman Catholic Church, Dana, Sask, and they lived on their homestead happily for seven years.

Shortly after their marriage, John was called to the Army in 1918 during the First World War; he was with the 1st Battalion, Home Defense, Private 1st class. He stayed in Regina for a while, when the war was over he came home to live in is homestead, while he was gone Katherine stayed at Michael and Agniegzka’s place, helping them out.

During that time John Bunk was selling his quarter of land, so Michael went ahead and bought this land, Sec 14, Twp 40, Rge 28, W 2nd which was given to John and Katherine.

The first son born was Joseph on October 26th, 1919, later daughter Pauline was born on February 14th, 1921, the third child born as son Frank on August 19th, 1923. Mother’s last child to be born was son Kazimer on September 26th, 1924.

It was joy and happiness for both of our Parents for seven years, but due to mother’s illness we were left alone with Dad and she was laid to rest peacefully on February 19, 1925 in Queen of Peace Cemetery.

Our Dad, John hired an older lady named Konwalizka to take care of us for a while. Later that year John met Anna Chilliak and was married.

Three more children were born to John and Anna, Sister Mary lived for a while then she died. Son Steve was born in 1928, and daughter Tina was born May, 1930.

Here is the earliest map where Michael Lucyszyn and his sons received their homesteads for $10.00, there was a Indian Trail named (Red River Trails) which ran through some of the Lucyzsyn land, including the quarter sec where Queen of Peace Church was built on John Bunks, SE Sec 14, Twp 40, Rge 28, W 2nd.

The church was built by Lucyshyn, Grudza, Mazurkewich, Dinter and Burtneys.

John purchased land from Vandel, NE Sec 14, Twp 40, Rge 28, W 2nd Meridian and had borrowed money from Mike Stefanuak to pay for that land. John Lucyshyn owned that land till his retirement.

Depression years were very hard on farmers, the interest rate on mortgage money was growing higher and higher, so to reduce the debit Dad and us boys raised more cattle and hogs to pay off the mortgage.

As the years progressed Dad bought the quarter SW on Sec 1, Twp 40, Rge 28, W2nd Meridian mainly for pasture and hay, he also bought the first tractor on steel lugs; it was a John Deere D 15-27 turning the flywheel was how it had to be started.

Dad also rented out one quarter of land from Metro Chilliak and in the year 1943 John Czaykowski died, so when his daughter was selling the land, NW Sec 14, Twp 40, Rge 28, W of 2nd, Dad had bought it on payment, so much a year till it was paid for.

We saved our money and purchased a threshing machine of our own. We had six teams hauling bundles by rack and horses, Steve Rychinski, Laurence Kieltyka, Fred Bodnar, Joe Lucyshyn, Alex Lucyshyn and Kazimer Lucyshyn.

In the spring of 1952 we purchased a new Int. W6 tractor, and in the year 1953 in the fall, we purchased a New Int. 127 self propelled combine at a reasonable price; it was the only combine in the district.

By this time Brother Joe had married and went to live on his own. Brother Frank got married and moved to Saskatoon taking a job there. Brother Steve had school and took a job elsewhere as he did not want to do farming.

I, Kazimer was left with Dad and brother-in-law Fred Bodnar. We worked together for a long time as well brother Joe helped whenever he could. Brother Joe bought himself a new two ton Ford truck and he hauled cattle, hogs and even eggs and cream to various places to make a living. This was all from the neighbors and families in the district.

In the year 1958 I, Kazimer decided to move around the Prince Albert district with my family, as there was power on the land, and Number 11 highway ran along the property.

Dad then bought a house in Saskatoon, so Joe and Fred rented the land. Later Dad sold all the land and lived in the City until he was laid to rest on November 24, 1978.

It was quite a transition for Dad and Mom moving to an urban community verses farm life but with us in the city; it did not take long for them to meet new neighbors with similar interests. Lady of Czestochowa polish parish was getting organized and they were involved with this parish. In no time they established their independence in the city using bus services whatever their needs were.

Occasionally Dad would take the bus to McDowell to visit Kazmir and quite frequently in the summer with Fred by car to the farm where his heart was. His true friend he left behind was his black dog a great companion when he returned to the farm.

On September 6, 1975, Dad and Mom celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at Our Lady of Czestochowa Parish. This special celebration is a milestone of married life which they were able to enjoy when their health was good.

Hospitality was very traditional. Dad always had a bottle of Rye for best wishes and good food to accompany the visit. They enjoyed their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren visits dearly. Dad and Mom were grateful for support of their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Not too often did we hear about their aches and pains. The Good Lord had taken Dad suddenly on Nov 24, 1978, and,

Mom continued to live by herself. Mom was always very independent. Her biggest hobby was her backyard. She was able to operate the lawn mower. The flowers, berries and gardening are what motivated and gave her a burst of strength. Spring could not come fast enough. Mom liked to travel and socialize. Mom was determined to stay in her little castle until health failed. The Good Lord called her home, Oct 13, 1995 only a month after celebrating her 91st birthday.

John was born to Michael and Agniegzka Lucyshyn on August 26, 1894 in the small village of Losiacsu, Poland.
