It took two weeks to cross the ocean. Most of the family became seasick on the voyage and were happy when they finally arrived in Halifax, N.S. (the journey was so rough it even made the local news) From there they boarded the train to Winnipeg, then traveled further west to Rosthern N.W.T. (now Saskatchewan).

During the Lucyszyn family’s first year they lived at Harry Stadnyk’s place near Alvena, as the homesteads were not available due to certain contract on township 40. While waiting, Michael went out working as he only ten dollars in his pocket and this was saved for buying a homestead.

Michael applied and received his homestead, packed their belongings and provisions in a wagon pulled by oxen and started for the long journey to their homestead located on section 4, Township 40, range 28, west of the 2nd meridian.

They built a straw hut in which they lived for one month. Oxen were used to break the land, but when the hot weather came, the oxen would take to the water and remain there for the rest of the day. Gophers were so bad that one year they ate the straw hut, and they were forced to build another house, a sod house with a thatched roof.

They had two weddings in the sod house. Their daughter Rose married John Popovitch and son Nichola married Anastasia Yanciw. The weddings at that time were a real celebration with musicians and twenty to twenty-five people attending.

The first years they went to Rosthern and Moose Jaw by oxen to buy flour and supplies to last a year. In 1915 the family built a new home out of lumber purchased in Vonda. In 1919 a new barn was built.

Originally the threshing was done by hand by beating the grain with sticks, then cleaning and bagging it.
